MUSIC THERAPY: Music therapy uses the elements of music such as lyrics, rhythm, melody to bring about positive social, physical, and psychological changes in youth. Reed Cottage is the site of Bethany's music therapy program. It also provides temporary housing for music therapy interns as they work with Bethany youth to complete their courses of study. (more)
MEDICAL SERVICES : Primary medical services are provided by a resident, registered nurse. The nurse is also the individual who initiates referrals to appropriate local physicians. Referral for specialized treatment are made to one of the regional hospitals.
Routine dental care, six month check-ups, and prophylaxis are provided by a part-time staff dental hygienist who is at the Bethany infirmary once a week. The dental hygienist works in conjunction with the Bethany staff dentist, who has an office on campus. When necessary, this dentist makes referrals to community specialists for oral surgery, orthodontic, or endodontic services.
THERAPEUTIC RECREATION: A comprehensive program of therapeutic/recreational activities is available to all youth residing at Bethany. The activities are scheduled in accordance with the identified needs and interests of the youth, with each youth typically being involved in one individual and one group activity per week.
These activities are designed to assist youth in maintaining or further developing the interpersonal and collaborative skills necessary to successfully function in social settings requiring teamwork as well as the physical skills needed for participation on athletic teams. Stress management and a life-long appreciation for athletic activities are intended to be long-term goals of this program.
Opportunities for outdoor activities may include swimming in Bethany' spacious pool complete with two tubular slides and a covered pavilion; basketball courts; an on-campus pond stocked with bass and trout; bike riding; skate boarding; hiking; seasonal activities such as the annual Boat Race, Hawaiian Luau, Fishing Rodeo, and Western Night; and annual outings to places such as Knoebel's Park. Youth do not need a license to fish on Bethany grounds.
SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING: Providing opportunities for spiritual growth and awareness is a vital part of campus life. Bausman Memorial Church on Bethany’s campus is a congregation of the United Church of Christ with standing in the Heidelberg Association. Worship is conducted every week and attendance by all youth is required. It is expected that youth will “dress up” for church.
ARTS AND CRAFTS: Frick Cottage serves as the arts and crafts center, where youth work with an instructor and a wide variety of media to engage in creative self expression and learn various art techniques, such as water color and sculpture. |
