Bethany’s Art Department provides various art related groups and individual sessions to youth who reside at Bethany. Youth have the opportunity to choose from Pottery, Fused Glass, Mosaics, and Mixed Media projects.
Our youth create fused-glass pieces and painted tiles for our special events, allowing us to share their talents with our wonderful donors and supporters.
Our Pottery group begins with basic clay building skills such as pinch pots, coil, and slab built pottery. After our youth learn the basics they are introduced to wheel throwing possibilities. Youth also have the opportunity to experiment with various glazing techniques. Youth may also choose to participate in mass production projects to further develop skills.
Our Fused Glass group focuses on basic kiln formed fused glass pieces. Youth begin by making sets of coasters to learn how the glass melts and reacts in the kiln. They then progress to larger pieces such as bowls, wall plaques, and vases. Youth learn the process of fusing and slumping to bring their design ideas to full creation.
Our Mosaics group allows our youth to create mosaic garden spheres, bird baths, wall art and vases. Youth use anything from colored glass, pebbles, tiles, and stone to create unique designs of their liking. Often the items are displayed at their cottages, in campus gardens, or in their own bedrooms.
Our Mixed Media group allows youth to try different mediums to create projects. We use anything from more typical art mediums such as acrylic paint, watercolors, oil and chalk pastels, and various papers to non-traditional mediums such as puzzle pieces, sand, gravel, glass, and various other found objects to create texture and add interest to the pieces.
Our studio produces “Bethany Bowls” which are made by the youth in our Pottery groups. We also produce several hundred Christmas Ornaments for sale through various venues, including UCC Conference Meetings and our Summer Concert Series.
Youth produced dog bone shaped ornaments for a Community Service Project and donated them to the Lebanon Humane Society to sell and use the proceeds to help the shelter animals. We also donated some of the dog bone ornaments to “Awesome Dawgs” Dog Training in Temple, PA where proceeds benefit the Berks County Humane Society.
We hope to get some of our artwork and products into other areas to sell year round to continue to benefit the studio and our youth here on campus. Please call us at (610) 589-4501 if you are interested in displaying or selling pieces from Bethany’s Art Studio.
Support the Arts
The first floor of Frick Cottage is the home of our Art Studio. The Studio has been under renovation for the last year. New floors and windows were installed and the studio was painted. We also purchased a pottery kiln, pottery wheels, shelving, a glass kiln, and various glass cutting tools.
The Studio is always seeking new art supplies for our youth. To learn more about how you can provide a great experience for our youth, please contact the Development Office at (610) 589-6828.
